On yesterday’s morning patrol we came upon a gang of poachers and caught them in the act having just killed a big bull Elephant . Our arrival on the scene scared the poachers off while they were trying to remove the Elephants tusks. It was so tragic as Elephant are wonderful creatures and these Elephant are our neighbours and we recognise many of them. Our whole team was saddened and badly affected by this incident. They killed the Elephant with a poisonous arrow and a spear. It was a horrendous death for this poor animal.
This also worries Predator Aware about Lions and Leopards and other wildlife in our area as there has been a recent increase in Elephant poaching in these Masai Mara wildlands.
Predator Aware: Every picture tells a story
Predator Aware: Will explaining to the KWS anti poaching team what happened.
It is a reality that poaching happens everywhere where you have wildlife and that animal lovers everywhere must try not to be put off by.
Predator Aware and the Kenya Wildlife Service as well as local Maasai wildlife authorities, The Narok County Council, are facing this in a positive approach – yes it is a terrible reality but equally it is so important to battle this in every way possible.Trained wildlife rangers and anti poaching teams are in the field constantly but it is a huge area to try and protect. Predator Aware was very impressed with the reaction and response in yesterday’s sad incident. It is the prevention of this poaching through swift response and constant hard work that enable us to focus on the good and wonderful aspects of the Masai Mara and other great wilderness treasures.
Predator Aware: KWS with their tracking team begin the search for the poachers.
Wildlife and wilderness compel and fascinate visitors and continue to draw people to these amazing places. Predator Aware and our Maasai neighbours ask you not to be put off by the negative side of wildlife and wilderness management instead try to realise what it takes to sustain them.
